I’m going to let you in on a little secret… the first time I tried homeschooling kindergarten, I completely failed.
Not because I didn’t care — in fact, I obsessed about it daily.
It was simply because I had no plan.
I thought I could wing it, follow my instincts, and somehow stay consistent while juggling everything else...
But the truth?
I was overwhelmed, scattered, and constantly second-guessing myself.
Now, as I prepare to homeschool kindergarten for the second time, I’m doing things differently. I created a simple, faith-led process to help me stay focused, flexible, and grounded — and that’s exactly what I’m sharing with you today.
These 7 practical steps will help you plan your homeschool year with peace and purpose, so you don’t have to learn the hard way like I did.
Let’s jump into the 7 Steps to Planning Your Best Homeschool Year Yet.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. - Philippians 4:6 NIV
Before you start planning and buying curriculum, take time to pray.
Not just a quick "Lord, help me" prayer, but a quiet moment to sit with God and ask for specific direction.
What would it look like if you invited Him into every part of your homeschool?
Ask Him to show you:
How to structure your days
What each of your children needs most
Which curriculum is best for your family
What should this season of your life look like
Be detailed. Lay it all at His feet. The overwhelm, the doubts, the desire to be perfect. He cares about every part of your homeschool, and He wants to guide you through it with peace.
Think about what matters most to your family and include the things God has placed on your heart.
Your intentions will help you filter decisions and focus your energy. Write 1-3 simple statements to guide you.
Think: peace over pressure, connection over perfection, or slow mornings with room to breathe.
These aren't just feel-good words. They help you say no to what doesn't align and yes to what matters.
Because you've already prayed and set clear intentions, this step gets to be simple and Spirit-led, not overwhelming.
Let your prayer guide what you don't need to waste time researching. You're not her to gather all the options, just the right ones for your family.
Here's how to keep it easy:
Start with looking up the homeschool laws in your state
List only the subjects you need curriculum for
Set a time limit (30-60 minutes max)
Compare just 2-3 options per subject
Use your intentions as a filter when deciding
Trust that the clarity you asked God for is already leading you. No rabbit holes. No second-guessing. Just peaceful, focused decisions.
Now that you've prayed, set intentions, and done focused research; it's time to decide.
But here's the truth: you don't need the "perfect" curriculum. You need one that aligns with your family's values, your season of life, and your child's unique needs.
Ask yourself:
Does this support the kind of homeschool we're trying to build?
Will this help my child grow? Not just academically, but in character and faith?
Can I realistically follow through with this in our current routine?
It's okay to choose simple. It's okay to change your mind later. What matters most is that it feels aligned.
Let go of the pressure to recreate public school at home. You're building something better. Something that honors you family's flow and values.
Instead of strict time blocks, think rhythm. A peaceful, flexible structure that gives your days direction without the overwhelm.
Your rhythm might look like:
Breakfast
Morning Time with prayer, songs, and read alouds
Midday focused work (math, phonics, etc.)
Snack
Outdoor Play, rest, or quiet reading
Lunch
Afternoon family subjects or life skills
Start simple. Don't over schedule. And don't forget: you're allowed to pivot. Some days will feel smooth, others will be messy. The goal isn't perfection, it's connection.
Your rhythm is there to support you, not stress you.
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 NIV
You weren't meant to homeschool alone. God designed us for community, encouragement, wisdom, and those "me too" moments that remind us we're not crazy.
Support doesn't have to be big or formal. Start small:
Text a homeschool friend to check in once a week
Join a local co-op or church-based homeschool group
Follow 1-3 encouraging voices online (not twenty)
Reach out when you're struggling. It's not weakness, it's wisdom.
And if you don't have anyone yet. Pray for your people. God is faithful to bring the right community in the right season.

This is our simple homeschool basket it houses what we need to complete each days work and we are not bound to just one area.
You don't need a Pinterest-perfect classroom. You need a space that serves your family and supports your homeschool flow.
Keep it simple:
A shelf or rolling cart with the day's supplies
The dining room table or lap desks
Visual tools like a rhythm chart, calendar, or whiteboard
Think function over fancy. Use what you have. Let beauty and Scripture sneak in where it brings joy, but don't let aesthetics become a distraction.
Need a budget tip? Repurpose what's already in your home. Clipboards, mason jars, bins, packing tape as DIY lamination. It all works.
Planning your homeschool year doesn't have to feel like a burden. With prayer, intention, and a little strategy, you can create a rhythm that fits your family and honors the season you're in.
Start small. Let it be imperfect. Trust that God will meet you in the process and fill in the gaps.
You don't have to figure it all out alone and you don't have to remember every step.
